You know the smell any 1980s-90s American sedan has? It's probably a clapped out Grand Marquis or a GM W-body. The AC still blasts out ice crystals even if every warning light on the dash is lit. It has bench seats and a column shifter. There's a Kleenex box on the parcel shelf and a Jerry Clowers cassette dangling out of the player. And it has this smell. Like a million cigarettes and petrified french fries and freon and a touch of gasoline. I wish I could describe it, but nothing else in the world smells like an old Caprice Classic, so there's no comparison. It smells like it's been places.
I love that smell.

I think the best smelling cars are old Volvos.

I had to get a shoulder x-ray this morning and as I was leaving the clinic, an older lady was getting out of a Cutlass Supreme. The door was open, and as I walked by I breathed in deeply. I felt a little dirty.

They have this mellow velour sweetness with a hint of burning oil from the turbo return line. Kind of like a halved spaghetti squash face down on an old leaky barbecue.

Or a state highway Super 8 corner room with a view of the local fracking farm.

I was recently at a pick and pull looking for parts for my Caprice. The one there smelled exactly the same as mine. It was like going home.

My friends old S60 smells exactly like crayons. Apparently it is due to them using wax to seal some areas of the car.
